RIIMPO326E - Conduct water vehicle operations overview

The RIIMPO326E – Conduct water vehicle operations unit equips participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely load, haul, and distribute water using a water vehicle across civil infrastructure, mining, and extractive industry environments. The course introduces participants to the operational principles, compliance obligations, and workplace procedures that underpin safe water cart operations. It is designed for individuals seeking to develop or formalise their capability in operating water vehicles while working within relevant legislative, regulatory, and organisational frameworks.

What you will learn:

  • Work Planning: Interpret work instructions, access necessary documentation, and confirm compliance with workplace procedures before starting tasks.
  • Risk Management: Identify potential hazards and environmental issues, assess their risks, and implement appropriate control measures.
  • Safety Gear: Select and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) specific to the work activities and site conditions.
  • Vehicle Inspection: Conduct thorough pre-start and start-up checks, and perform post-operational inspections and shutdown procedures.
  • Fault Identification: Recognise equipment defects or faults and either rectify them within your scope of responsibility or report them correctly.
  • Machine Operation: Operate the water vehicle safely and efficiently, managing engine power and gear selection according to manufacturer requirements.
  • Water Distribution: Position the vehicle correctly at loading points and apply specialized techniques for hauling and discharging water.
  • Load Stability: Manage vehicle load limits and operate the machine to minimise the dangerous effects of water surge and sway during transport.
  • Communication Protocols: Use various communication techniques and equipment, including audible signals, to maintain safety during operations.
  • Site Housekeeping: Clean up the work area, carry out basic driver maintenance, and follow environmental procedures for recycling or disposing of materials.
  • Reporting Requirements: Complete written and verbal reports and documentation associated with vehicle operations accurately.
  • Technical Calculations: Use foundational numeracy skills to calculate safe working loads and moisture content requirements for soil.

On successful completion, graduates will be able to conduct water vehicle operations safely, consistently, and in accordance with industry standards and workplace procedures. They will demonstrate competence in loading, hauling, distributing water, performing routine operator maintenance, and contributing to safe work environments. This unit supports individuals seeking employment or upskilling in operational roles across civil construction, coal mining, extractive industries, and metalliferous mining.
