PUAFIR207 - Operate breathing apparatus open circuit overview

The PUAFIR207 operate breathing apparatus open circuit unit provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely operate open-circuit breathing apparatus in irrespirable or oxygen-deficient environments. This nationally recognised unit is relevant to workers involved in fire and emergency response activities where respiratory protection is required during routine operations or emergency situations. Participants develop the essential capability to work safely while relying on life-support equipment in high-pressure environments.

What you will learn:

  • Apparatus Inspection: Conduct pre-operational tests and checks to ensure the equipment is functional and safe for use.
  • Donning & Operating: Master the correct techniques for donning, fitting, and starting the apparatus under operational conditions.
  • Air Management: Learn to calculate and monitor air consumption and pressure to ensure a safe exit from hazardous areas.
  • Safety & Entrapment: Practice situational awareness and emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of equipment failure or entrapment.
  • Communication & Teamwork: Develop effective communication techniques while wearing a face mask and coordinate activities within a team.

This course is suitable for personnel who may be required to use open-circuit breathing apparatus as part of their role in emergency services or industrial safety teams. On completion, participants will be better equipped to operate breathing apparatus safely and confidently, support effective emergency response operations, and comply with all organisational and legislative requirements.
