PUASAR025 - Undertake confined space rescue overview

The PUASAR025 – Undertake confined space rescue course equips learners with the essential knowledge and practical capability required to safely perform rescue operations in confined space environments. This introductory unit establishes a strong foundation in hazard identification, risk assessment, and safe work practices, ensuring participants can operate confidently and in accordance with legislative and organisational requirements.

What you will learn:

  • Confined Space Awareness — Understand confined space definitions, characteristics, and regulatory obligations.
  • Hazard Identification — Recognise atmospheric, environmental, and operational hazards that may impact rescue activities.
  • Risk Assessment — Apply structured assessment methods to evaluate risks and determine appropriate control measures.
  • Rescue Planning — Develop rescue plans that align with workplace procedures, safety standards, and emergency response protocols.
  • Specialised Equipment Use — Operate rescue tools, PPE, and atmospheric monitoring devices safely and effectively.
  • Safe Entry & Exit — Implement controlled entry, exit, and casualty retrieval techniques in confined space scenarios.
  • Team Coordination — Practise communication strategies, role allocation, and teamwork essential for high‑risk rescue operations.
  • Emergency Response — Apply structured response actions to manage incidents while maintaining personal and team safety.

Upon successful completion, participants will be recognised as competent to perform confined space rescue operations in accordance with national standards. This training strengthens the professional capability of emergency response personnel, ensuring all rescue activities are carried out safely, effectively, and in full compliance with organisational and legislative requirements.

Participants will need to have physical capacity to undertake the demands of performance tasks in course demonstrations and assessments.  This unit is considered highly physical. Students must be capable of moving through restricted openings (crawling, bending, or climbing) while wearing approximately 15kg of breathing apparatus. Assessment often involves simulated operational conditions, such as working in dark, low-light, or smoke-filled areas and lifting or dragging casualties.

Participants in PUASAR025 must be clean‑shaven to ensure an effective seal when wearing breathing apparatus during practical activities, in accordance to AS/NZS1715:2009. This is an extract from AS/NZS 1715: 2009 “Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective devices” which describes the requirements for correct use of breathing apparatus (BA) in an irrespirable atmosphere. It is essential that all participants conform to this standard to successfully complete the practical component of the unit/course requiring the use of breathing apparatus

Training and assessment will involve realistic confined‑space conditions, including reduced visibility, heat, and the use of breathing apparatus. Beyond physical fitness, students should be able to manage feelings of claustrophobia or fear of heights, as the training involves suspended harnesses and confined spaces.
