HLTAID014 - Provide Advanced First Aid overview

The HLTAID014 – Provide Advanced First Aid unit builds the skills and knowledge required to provide an advanced first aid response in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines and national clinical standards. It is designed for individuals who may be required to manage complex or multiple‑casualty incidents in community or workplace settings. Learners develop the capability to recognise emergencies, coordinate resources, deliver advanced first aid treatments, and support casualties until medical assistance arrives.

What you will learn:

  • Emergency Response — Recognise, assess, and manage emergency situations while ensuring safety for yourself, bystanders, and casualties.
  • Casualty Assessment — Conduct primary and secondary surveys, assess vital signs, and identify injuries or illnesses using history, signs, and symptoms.
  • Advanced Treatment — Provide first aid for a wide range of medical and trauma conditions including bleeding, shock, fractures, anaphylaxis, asthma, envenomation, burns, and environmental injuries.
  • Resource Coordination — Deploy resources, establish communication links, and coordinate first aid activities until professional help arrives.
  • Team Leadership — Respond to multi‑casualty incidents, apply basic triage principles, and use safe manual‑handling and extraction techniques.
  • Equipment Use — Operate first aid and ancillary equipment according to manufacturer instructions, including tourniquets, haemostatic dressings, auto‑injectors, thermometers, and immobilisation devices.
  • Communication & Reporting — Convey incident details to emergency services, complete workplace documentation, and maintain privacy and confidentiality.
  • Post‑Incident Review — Recognise psychological impacts on responders, access support services, and contribute to incident debriefing and review processes.

This unit is ideal for workers and community members who may be first on scene during complex emergencies and need the confidence to act decisively. On completion, learners will be equipped to manage advanced first aid situations, support casualty recovery, and contribute to safer workplaces and communities through effective, coordinated emergency response.

CPR Renewal Requirements In accordance with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines, ANZCOR (ARC/NZRC).
Guideline 10.1 explicitly states that regular refresher training in CPR is required, and in practice, Australian training providers interpret this as annual CPR refresher training in line with ARC guidance.
Many workplaces and WHS regulators require evidence of annual CPR currency. Learners are responsible for confirming any industry‑specific or employer‑specific requirements that may apply.
