HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation overview

The HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course equips learners with the essential skills and knowledge required to respond to cardiac emergencies in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. Suitable for workplaces, community settings, and individuals responsible for first aid readiness, this unit supports safe, confident, and timely intervention during life‑threatening incidents.

What you will learn:

  • Recognising and assessing emergencies — Identify hazards, assess the casualty, and determine when CPR is required in accordance with ARC guidelines.
  • Ensuring scene safety — Maintain safety for yourself, bystanders, and the casualty while preparing to deliver CPR.
  • Performing CPR on adults, children, and infants — Deliver uninterrupted CPR cycles, apply correct compression and ventilation techniques, and follow ARC‑aligned procedures for different age groups.
  • Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) — Operate an AED safely, follow device prompts, and deliver at least one shock as required.
  • Managing complications — Respond appropriately to regurgitation or vomiting, maintain airway patency, and position unconscious breathing casualties to reduce airway compromise.
  • Communicating incident details — Provide accurate verbal reports to emergency services and complete workplace documentation while maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
  • Post‑incident responsibilities — Recognise potential psychological impacts on responders and contribute to incident reviews and debriefing processes.

This nationally recognised unit supports compliance with workplace first aid requirements and strengthens organisational safety capability. On completion, participants will be able to respond decisively to cardiac emergencies, apply evidence‑based CPR techniques, and contribute to safer workplaces and communities through effective first aid practice.

CPR Renewal Requirements In accordance with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines, ANZCOR (ARC/NZRC).
Guideline 10.1 explicitly states that regular refresher training in CPR is required, and in practice, Australian training providers interpret this as annual CPR refresher training in line with ARC guidance. Many workplaces and WHS regulators require evidence of annual CPR currency. Learners are responsible for confirming any industry‑specific or employer‑specific requirements that may apply.  guideline-10-1-basic-life-support-bls-training-230.pdf
