RIIMPO317 - Conduct roller operations overview

The RIIMPO317 – Conduct roller operations unit equips learners with the skills and knowledge required to operate a roller to compact materials safely and effectively across civil construction and related work environments. The course introduces participants to the operational principles, compliance obligations, and workplace procedures that underpin safe roller operations. It is designed for individuals working in site‑based roles who must complete compaction tasks in accordance with legislative, regulatory, and organisational requirements.

What you will learn:

  • Operational Planning: Interpret work instructions, evaluate environmental risks, and identify site hazards before commencing work.
  • Safety Equipment: Select and correctly utilise appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for civil construction environments.
  • Routine Checks: Perform comprehensive machine pre-start, start-up, park, shutdown, and equipment isolation procedures.
  • Traffic Management: Coordinate with onsite personnel and implement mandatory safety requirements for traffic control.
  • Machine Operations: Drive and operate the roller effectively using techniques adapted to ground conditions and material traits.
  • Compaction Quality: Achieve precise engineering patterns and required material densities during civil operations.
  • Technical Knowledge: Understand general equipment capabilities, machine limitations, and interchangeable drum accessories.
  • Material Behaviour: Analyse basic material technology, density variations, and the principles of earth compaction.
  • Hazard Management: Apply safe work practices, continuous risk monitoring, and emergency response protocols.
  • Foundational Skills: Use essential reading, communication, and basic earthworks calculations to safely execute tasks.
  • Documentation Management: Read technical drawings, interpret sketches, and accurately complete required workplace reports.
  • Equipment Relocation: Prepare the roller for physical transit and assist with loading or unloading from transport floats.

On successful completion, participants will be able to conduct roller operations safely, consistently, and in line with industry expectations. They will demonstrate competence in compacting materials, adjusting operating techniques to suit site conditions, managing equipment performance, and performing routine operator maintenance.
