RIIERR305E - Control underground fires overview

The RIIERR305E – Control underground fires course equips participants with the nationally recognised skills and knowledge required to plan, prepare for, and safely manage underground fire‑fighting operations across the resources and infrastructure sectors. It builds the capability to assess fire risks, implement effective control measures, and respond confidently to underground fire incidents while protecting personnel, assets, and critical infrastructure.

What you will learn:

  • Risk Assessment — identifying underground fire hazards and evaluating potential impacts
  • Fire Control Measures — applying strategies to contain, control, and mitigate underground fires
  • Suppression Techniques — using safe and effective methods to extinguish underground fire scenarios
  • Equipment Operation — operating, maintaining, and refurbishing specialised underground fire‑fighting equipment
  • Emergency Response — responding to fire incidents in accordance with organisational and regulatory requirements
  • Monitoring & Control — observing fire behaviour and adjusting strategies under changing conditions
  • Decision‑Making — applying sound judgement under pressure in dynamic emergency environments
  • Team Coordination — working collaboratively within structured response teams to ensure safe operations
  • Communication Skills — maintaining clear, concise communication during emergency activities
  • Practical Application — participating in realistic underground fire simulations and hands‑on exercises

Upon successful completion, participants will gain the skills and confidence to safely manage underground fire incidents in line with national standards. This training strengthens the professional capability of personnel working in high‑risk underground environments, ensuring all fire‑fighting operations are effective, safe, and fully compliant with organisational and regulatory requirements.

  • Age: Participants must be a minimum of 18 years old
  • Unique Student Identifier (USI): A valid USI must be provided prior to course commencement
  • Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital needs (LLND) must be assessed before commencing the course you are enrolled for. You need to be confident to interpret safety instructions, complete documentation and communicate directly and using vehicle radios to complete the theory and practical components of the course
  • Identification: Official Photo Identification will need to be presented on the day of your course
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to wear breathing apparatus and perform tasks under simulated operational conditions (e.g. confined spaces, reduced visibility, or heat exposure)
  • Clean Shaven: It is an entry condition for this course that all participants are to be clean shaven, in accordance to AS/NZS1715:2009. This is an extract from AS/NZS 1715: 2009 “Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective devices” which describes the requirements for correct use of breathing apparatus (BA) in an irrespirable atmosphere. It is essential that all participants conform to this standard to successfully complete the practical component of the unit/course requiring the use of breathing apparatus
