RIIERR303E - Operate in self-contained regenerative oxygen breathing apparatus overview

The RIIERR303E Operate in self-contained regenerative oxygen breathing apparatus unit provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely operate specialised breathing apparatus in hazardous or oxygen-deficient environments. It is specifically designed for workers in the mining, resources, and infrastructure industries where emergency response or work in confined, irrespirable atmospheres may be required. Participants develop the technical competence to rely on life-support equipment while performing critical tasks under pressure.

What you will learn:

  • Apparatus Preparation: Conduct pre-operational checks and ensure the breathing apparatus is fully functional and ready for use.
  • Operational Use: Master the correct techniques for donning, starting, and monitoring the apparatus during high-demand activities.
  • Hazardous Navigation: Learn to move safely through restricted, low-visibility, or heat-stressed environments while wearing the equipment.
  • Team Communication: Maintain effective communication and coordination with team members while operating under a restricted air supply.
  • Post-Operational Care: Follow strict protocols for removing, cleaning, and reporting on the status of the apparatus after use.

This course is suitable for emergency response team members or workers who may be required to use self-contained regenerative oxygen breathing apparatus as part of their role. On completion, participants will be better equipped to operate safely and confidently in hazardous environments, contributing effectively to site emergency response and risk management activities.

  • Age: Minimum of 18 years old
  • Unique Student Identifier (USI): A valid USI must be provided prior to course commencement
  • Language, Literacy and Numeracy and Digital needs (LLND) must be assessed before commencing the course you are enrolled for. You need to be confident to interpret safety instructions, complete documentation and communicate directly and using radios to complete the theory and practical components of the course
  • Identification: Official Photo Identification will need to be presented on the day of your course
  • Physical Capacity: Ability to wear breathing apparatus and perform tasks under simulated operational conditions (e.g. confined spaces, reduced visibility, or heat exposure)
  • Clean Shaven: It is an entry condition for this course that all participants are to be clean shaven, in accordance to AS/NZS1715:2009. This is an extract from AS/NZS 1715: 2009 “Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective devices” which describes the requirements for correct use of breathing apparatus (BA) in an irrespirable atmosphere. It is essential that all participants conform to this standard to successfully complete the practical component of the unit/course requiring the use of breathing apparatus
